We’ve created a list of the best fuel efficient SUVs!
Fuel-efficient SUVs are now available to buy in both the new and used market. The trick is finding a used SUV with good gas mileage that also checks all of your boxes in terms of style, size, and other features that suit your needs.
What SUVs Have the Best Gas Mileage in 2023?
53 MPG City / 54 MPG Highway
The Kia Niro is an incredibly fuel-efficient subcompact hybrid SUV. You could even get your hands on a plug-in hybrid and full-electric model if you wanted.
This Kia Niro model is at the top of our list for SUVs with the best gas mileage overall for several reasons. Not only does it have all the techy bells and whistles we like, it has the perfect amount of cargo space for a fun road trip getaway while boasting a fuel economy of 43-50 mpg according to the EPA.
Lexus UX 250H
43 MPG City / 41 MPG Highway
It shouldn’t surprise you that there’s a used Lexus SUV on our “best of” list. The Lexus UX boasts an efficient layout without having a hybrid system. But in 2023, the UX will become a hybrid SUV and EPA estimates it churns out an impressive 43 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway with TWD and 41 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway with AWD.
This is all coming from a sizable 2 Liter that puts out about 169 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque. Not to mention, it’s a luxury SUV that’ll have you riding in smooth style with plenty of tech and performance features to make you forget to feel bad for not owning a hybrid in this day and age.
27 MPG City / 35 MPG Highway
Anywhere you look, there’s a Toyota RAV4 of some age — and for good reason. These compact SUVs are among the best in virtually every category from reliability to capability and efficiency.
These affordable and attractive SUVs boast up to 27 mpg in the city, 35 mpg on the highway, and a combined 30 mpg according to the EPA. What’s interesting about the RAV4 is that the trim levels don’t take away from the fuel efficiency like they do in many other SUV models.
They also all use the same 2.5L 14 engines with a 203 hp output, which is impressive, to say the least.
27 MPG City / 33 MPG Highway
The Ford Escape is another fuel-efficient SUV that’s worth taking a look at. This unassuming compact SUV achieves an estimated fuel economy of 27 mpg in the city, 33 mph on the highway and a total of 30 mpg combined, but adding AWD drops these numbers to 26 mpg city and 31 mpg highway.
This is achieved with its base engine: a 1.5L turbocharged inline-three that puts out upwards of 180 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque that’s mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Escape’s available front-wheel drive is also what contributes to its fuel efficiency and swiftness.

30 MPG City / 37 MPG Highway
The Nissan Rogue has always been a nice-looking, gas efficient compact SUV and with its recent redesign, we’re getting a more upscale look and punchier engine. This 5-seater is powered by a 1.5L turbo engine and has options for front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive with modest towing capacity for those who need it.
It also gets 30 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway FWD and 28 mpg city / 25 mpg highway in AWD — and it’s very affordable.
Hybrid SUVs with the Best Gas Mileage
Hyundai Tucson Hybrid
37 MPG City / 36 MPG Highway
The Hyundai Tucson model isn’t just a hybrid, it’s also incredibly sporty and modestly priced. The newest Tucson models are futuristic on the inside while remaining rugged and stylish on the outside. It boasts a whopping 37 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 37 mpg (combined) and a whole lot of cargo space.
There’s also an option for a plug-in hybrid model that can achieve 33 mpg on electricity alone.
Honda CR-V Hybrid
40 MPG City / 34 MPG Highway
The newest CR-V Hybrid rivals the RAV4, Ford Escape, and even the Hyundai Tucson thanks to significant upgrades. We’re talking modern safety tech, a more roomy interior, standard all-wheel drive, and a fuel economy rating of 37 combined mpg, 40 city mpg, and 34 hwy mpg.
The FWD option offers 43 city mpg, 36 hwy mpg, and a combined 40 mpg.
It’s also worth mentioning that the newer Honda CR-V models have more horsepower and torque than its non-hybrid CR-V counterparts, and they’re not even turbocharged.
Best MPG for Full-Size, Mid-Size & Sub-Compact SUVs
18 MPG City / 22 MPG Highway
If you’re looking for a full-size SUV that’s both fuel-efficient and stylish without sacrificing its sportiness, the recent Audi Q7 model is for you. This model offers three rows of seating, all-wheel drive, the latest in tech and safety features, and a 3.0L V6 Turbo engine.
It comes with a hefty yet reasonable price tag and can give you 18 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.
39 MPG City / 35 MPG Highway
When you want a mid-size SUV at a reasonable price with an even more reasonable fuel economy, stop at the Kia Sorento.
Boasting 35-39 mpg thanks to its hybrid powertrain, the Sorento also offers a generous amount of space for its first two rows of seating and a little less for its third row. It’s also available as a plug-in hybrid which can achieve up to 32 mpg on electricity alone.
Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid
31 MPG City / 33 MPG Highway
The Corolla Cross is Toyota’s most recent crossover SUV, which looks very similar to the RAV4 in style. The Cross comes along with Toyota’s signature affordability and sporty trim level options as well as a base 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that puts out 169 hp on gas alone.
With its hybrid powertrain, you’re looking at a combined 32 mpg FWD, and a combined 30 mpg AWD. Despite its smaller size, it’s pretty generous with the cargo space and leg room.
