Learn More About Vehicle Service Contracts

A vehicle service contract — also commonly referred to as extended auto warranties, vehicle protection plans, or extended service contracts — is an agreement that protects you from having to pay for unexpected repairs out of pocket once your manufacturer’s warranty expires.

There are many different levels of coverage, but the two primary types of vehicle service contracts that you’re likely familiar with already:

  • The powertrain warranty
  • The bumper-to-bumper or exclusionary warranty

The powertrain warranty generally covers the parts that make your vehicle move, such as the engine, transmission, drive axles, transfer case, and other related parts. The bumper-to-bumper or exclusionary level essentially covers most parts that exist between your front and rear bumpers.

However, these bumper-to-bumper warranty programs tend to come with a few exclusions, so they typically list what isn’t covered rather than listing what is covered.

You’ll find that most vehicle service contract providers offer levels of coverage that fall somewhere in between the two types. Therefore, your vehicle protection plan could provide coverage for your powertrain as well as your air conditioning, brake system or other components. Other benefits may also include:

  • 24-hour roadside assistance
  • Towing services
  • Rental car reimbursement
  • Trip interruption reimbursement

These perks may be included in premium level vehicle protection plans at no additional cost.

Lastly, vehicle service contracts do come with time limits, however, they tend to last longer than the manufacturer’s warranty — usually for up to seven years or 100,000 miles.

What Isn’t Covered by Vehicle Service Contracts?

What Isn’t Covered by Vehicle Service Contracts?

What Isn’t Covered by Vehicle Service Contracts?

Even with the more extensive auto warranties, there will always be the following exclusions:

  • Paint, glass, and upholstery
  • Tires, wheels, and rims
  • Routine maintenance services
  • Normal wear and tear, such as brake pads or wiper blades
  • Damage that occurs from accidents, abuse, misuse, or environmental events, such as floods
  • Vehicle service contracts also won’t cover any pre-existing issues. Most providers have a waiting period of up to 30 days or 1,000 miles before coverage begins for this reason.

Is a Vehicle Protection Plan Worth It?

Vehicles are complicated and repairing them has only gotten more and more expensive in recent years. The cost of parts and labor have skyrocketed, so the cost to repair a vehicle will likely cost 25-30% more than it did just a few years ago. These skyrocketing costs are another reason to consider protecting yourself against unforeseen repairs. You can purchase a vehicle service contract at today’s pricing and protect yourself against the inflation of parts and labor pricing for years to come.

You’ll also sleep better at night knowing that you won’t be saddled with large repair bills if you do experience a breakdown. That peace of mind alone may make the decision to add an extended service contract worthwhile.

What is a Manufacturer’s Warranty and How is it Different?

What is a Manufacturer’s Warranty and How is it Different?

A manufacturer’s warranty comes as part of a new vehicle’s overall cost. It’s essentially the same as a vehicle service contract in that it’s designed for your protection against costly car issues and repairs.

With your new or used vehicle purchase, you may receive one or more of the following types of Manufacturer Warranties:

New Vehicle

May last 3yrs/ 50,000 miles. Plans like this essentially cover the bumper-to-bumper parts.

Powertrain

May last 5yrs/ 60,000 miles or more. This limited plan covers the engine, drivetrain, & transmission.

Emissions

This covers emissions-related parts such as tire pressure systems, the exhaust system, etc.

Corrosion

This protects against rust and corrosion (length of time varies by manufacturer).

Aside from being built into the purchase agreement, however, the manufacturer’s warranty may cover different issues — and it only lasts for a certain period of time.
